In 1910, the United States was a hotbed of innovation, cultural milestones, and societal progress, illustrating the dynamic spirit of the early 20th century. The incorporation of the Boy Scouts of America on February 8 represented a significant commitment to the development of young boys across the nation, instilling values of patriotism, courage, and self-reliance. This same year also marked a pivotal moment in broadcasting history with Lee de Forest’s transmission of live opera performances from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, showcasing the potential of radio as a medium for entertainment and information. Meanwhile, the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd, laid the foundation for an annual nationwide tradition honoring fathers and father figures. The passage of Earth through the tail of Halley’s Comet in 1910 captivated millions with its celestial spectacle, fostering widespread public interest in astronomy. Additionally, the year witnessed technological advancements that would shape the American landscape for decades to come. Georges Claude’s introduction of neon lighting in Paris hinted at the future brightness of American cities, while the Model T Ford’s dominance in the automobile market, facilitated by Henry Ford’s assembly line production, revolutionized transportation and solidified the car’s role in American society. Each of these events from 1910 underscores a period of immense creativity, growth, and transformation, reflecting a nation on the cusp of modernity and eager to embrace the future.

GEM MIRRORED ROMAN FINISHED PROOF SURFACES. ONLY 167 STRUCK. JUST 75 OR FEWER BELIEVED TO EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES.
Like the proof 1909, the proof 1910 Double Eagle was struck with the Roman Gold finish the blends satin and semi-reflective characteristics. As such, the issue is noticeably brighter than the matte/sandblast issues in the proof Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series. The 1910 is one of the more frequently encountered proofs of this type, but it is still an extremely rare coin when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. Although federal records indicate that 167 coins were struck, many of those pieces were destroyed in the Mint when they failed to sell by year’s end. Today, no more than 40-50 examples have survived in all grades.
